Christmas Eve

Despite a job loss, we've been very very blessed this year. This week the nasty long stomach flu invaded our house and instead of making fun at home, it was a grumpy place to be for the most part. Mike and I both had extra jobs this week, so we decided to break the gloom and travel to Wenatchee for their special family skate on Christmas Eve. Cheaper than going to a movie, we made memories that I'm sure will last a very long time... that, and my kids actually fell asleep quickly on Christmas Eve!
Last year I was homeschooling (wow, that seems like ages ago) and the group we schooled with held a skate at this very place. What a stark contrast in one year! First off, I barely went around once last year - terrified the entire time. This year, well, I was still terrified, but in 2 hours I zipped around that skating rink a total of 7 times, and I was skating the entire time! That's right, you do the math -- I was a speed demon.

Unfortunately, I forget blogger's quirks and uploaded these pics in the wrong order. Last year, Anabelle made it on to the ice for 5 minutes, crying the whole time. This year, she was excited!!! For the first half hour she glued herself to her dad and the rink wall, moving not even a quarter of the way down the rink. Then, a little teeny bopper snowplowed up to Anabelle and dared her to skate -- giving her some tips. That's all it took. By the end of the two hours, my little daredevil was skating in the middle of the ice. Better, as she will tell you, than her mom!

And Sam found this tower of buckets to skate wild and free around the ice with abandon. He graced me with one couple skate though. ( ;

Katarina always jumps in with two feet and was looking like a pro instantly. She loved skating with her dad. In her words, "we were flying! It was exhilirating."

I see a tradition in the making.

Anabelle's poise and confidence and stark transformation gained the notice of many people... especially adults. She got so many comments and exclamations even as we left the arena that now she thinks skating is one of "the funnest things to do!"
